Netflix has addressed reports that its hit original Korean drama ‘Teach You a Lesson’ is moving forward with a second season, offering a cautious response amid growing fan anticipation.
‘Teach You a Lesson’ Season 2 Rumors Ignite Fan Excitement
On July 21 KST, a local media outlet reported that Netflix is planning a second season of ‘Teach You a Lesson’, with discussions centered on continuing the story while preserving the world-building and narrative established in Season 1.
The report quickly fueled excitement among fans. Based on the popular webtoon of the same name, the original source material still contains numerous storylines that have yet to be adapted, leading many viewers to hope for a sequel.
Netflix’s Official Stance: “Nothing Has Been Decided”
Despite the speculation, Netflix has remained cautious.
A Netflix representative stated on July 21, “Nothing has been decided regarding the production of Season 2 at this time.”
When asked about potential filming schedules, casting, and other production details, the representative added, “Since nothing has been confirmed, no decisions have been made regarding those matters either.”
While discussions about a follow-up project are reportedly taking place within the industry, it appears fans will have to wait longer for an official announcement.
Global Phenomenon: ‘Teach You a Lesson’ Soars to Success
Although Netflix has not confirmed a second season, the drama’s overwhelming success has naturally fueled speculation.
Released on June 5, ‘Teach You a Lesson’ is a Netflix original Korean series adapted from the Naver webtoon of the same name. The story follows the fictional Teacher Rights Protection Bureau, an organization created to restore order to South Korea’s troubled education system, where abusive students, teachers, and parents have pushed school authority to the breaking point.
Kim Mu Yeol stars as Na Hwa Jin, alongside Lee Sung Min, Jin Ki Joo, and Pyo Ji Hoon. The series is directed by Hong Jong Chan, best known for ‘Juvenile Justice.’
The drama’s performance was remarkable from the start.
Just three days after its release, ‘Teach You a Lesson’ climbed to No. 1 on Netflix’s Non-English TV chart. During its debut week, it ranked No. 1 among non-English titles and No. 3 overall on Netflix’s global viewership rankings.
In its second week, the series reached No. 1 overall on Netflix globally, surpassing 200 million viewing hours and 20 million views. Those figures approached the weekly records set by ‘All of Us Are Dead,’ one of Netflix’s biggest Korean hits after ‘Squid Game.’
Its momentum continued through Weeks 3 and 4, maintaining the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s Global Top 10 Non-English TV chart while placing No. 3 overall during its fourth week.
According to Netflix’s Tudum rankings, the series recorded 7.3 million views between June 22 and June 28 alone. It ranked No. 1 in six countries, including Japan, Singapore, and Indonesia, while reaching the Top 10 in 75 countries.
Across its first four weeks, the drama also entered the top five among Netflix Korean dramas in both cumulative viewing hours and total views.
A Timely Narrative That Resonated
One of the biggest reasons behind the show’s success was its timely subject matter.
The series portrays a fictional organization that uses unconventional methods to confront the collapse of teacher authority, delivering a cathartic narrative that resonated with viewers both in South Korea and abroad.
In South Korea, the drama even reignited public discussion about strengthening protections for teachers, with politicians revisiting proposals related to teacher rights.
Cast Members Eager for a Return
The cast has also expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of returning.
Lead actor Kim Mu Yeol previously joked that if Season 2 becomes a reality, he hopes John Cena, who gave the series a shoutout following its release, would make a special cameo appearance.
Meanwhile, Pyo Ji Hoon, who played Bong Geun Dae, humorously remarked in an interview, “If Season 2 happens and I have to wear a school uniform again, I guess I’ll have to shave my beard and take even better care of my skin.”
With the drama continuing to generate buzz even after its release, anticipation for a sequel remains high among both fans and the cast.
