Mark Lee Addresses Scandals in Instagram Live

NCT’s Mark Lee recently took to Instagram Live, a direct and increasingly common way for idols to communicate with fans, to address several sensitive issues that had been circulating. The broadcast saw him openly discussing various scandals involving accusations of racism, religion, and more, showing a commitment to transparency that fans often appreciate.

Focus on Racism Controversy

During the live session, he notably focused on the racism controversy that had previously garnered significant attention. Mark reflected deeply on his past actions and comments, taking direct responsibility for them. He expressed remorse and a willingness to learn, emphasizing the importance of understanding and respect. This direct acknowledgment was a pivotal moment for many viewers, who had been awaiting his personal statement on the matter.

Especially to my Black fans, to the Black community — I know that I was, I should have, I am very responsible for — But, I really wanted to directly tell you guys it really wasn’t my intention with me knowing the meaning of the flag, the historical significance of it. It really shouldn’t have happened and it really does not reflect who I am as a person. Seeing so many fans hurt by it it really hurt me as well. I had no intention, knowing the meaning of the flag, and I should have, there are no excuses for that. I just wanted to promise you guys that nothing like that will ever happen again.

However, not long after the live broadcast concluded, Mark Lee posted a lengthy Instagram story. This follow-up communication aimed to clarify something specific he had said during the live broadcast, suggesting he felt a need to elaborate further or correct a potential misunderstanding. This act of immediate clarification demonstrated his commitment to ensuring his message was fully understood by his audience.

The Follow-Up Clarification

The Instagram story provided additional context and nuanced explanations for certain points raised in the live session, highlighting his dedication to clear communication.

“I want to clarify something I said during my Instagram Live. During the Live, I misspoke when I said that l knew the meaning and historical significance of the symbol. What I meant to say was that l did not know the meaning or historical significance of the symbol at the time.

I want to be clear: I did not understand what the symbol represented, and neither did my team. There is no excuse for that. l take full responsibility for my lack of awareness, and sincerely regret the hurt and pain this caused, especially to my Black fans. I have always believed in celebrating inclusivity, respecting others, and using my music to bring people together. What happened does not reflect those values or who I am as a person.

I recognize that not knowing does not lessen the impact. I deeply regret that I was uneducated about the history and meaning behind the symbol, and I am committed to learning, educating myself, and doing better moving forward. I am truly sorry to everyone l hurt. I hope my actions going forward can reflect the respect and inclusivity I believe in.”

However, netizens had a divided response to his clarification. While some fans praised his continued efforts to be transparent and accountable, appreciating the extra context provided in the story, others expressed skepticism. Some felt the clarification either complicated the initial apology or did not fully address their concerns, leading to further discussion and debate across online communities.

Fan Reactions and Ongoing Dialogue

The ongoing dialogue underscores the complexities idols face when addressing sensitive topics publicly, and the varied interpretations their words can generate within the vast K-Pop fandom.
