KBS2’s heartwarming weekend drama ‘Love On The Menu’ is not just cooking up delicious stories, but also soaring ratings! Captivating viewers with its deeply emotional narrative and an immersive eight-year journey of love and separation, the series is quickly becoming a fan favorite. Especially noteworthy is the triumphant return of Ahn Hee Yeon (Hani), making her highly anticipated comeback to television after three years.
The recent Episode 4, aired on August 2, delivered a powerful punch, depicting the heartbreaking breakup between leads Kim Moo Jin (played by the talented Ha Seok Jin) and Han Gyu Rim (portrayed by Ahn Hee Yeon). This emotional rollercoaster then fast-forwarded eight years, setting the stage for their unexpected and fateful reunion. The episode’s raw intensity resonated deeply, pushing the nationwide household rating to an impressive 13.3% according to Nielsen Korea, marking a new personal best for the series and demonstrating its consistent upward trajectory. This success also spotlights Ahn Hee Yeon’s return, marking her first television drama in three years.

A Deep Dive Into Family’s Complex Flavors
‘Love On The Menu’ follows two people who piece together the fragments of their broken families while preparing the warmest “table” of life. At its core, the series explores the complex and multilayered meaning of family.
Japanese comedian and filmmaker Takeshi Kitano once described family as “something you’d secretly want to throw away if no one were watching.” ‘Love On The Menu’ reflects that duality with striking realism. While family can provide warmth, stability, and a sense of belonging, it can also become the source of life’s greatest burdens. Those closest to us can sometimes become our deepest wounds—people who both create and destroy us, giving us life while also causing immense pain.
Even when people wish they could walk away from their families, they ultimately remain connected. Family members may argue fiercely in the morning only to sit down together for dinner that same evening. They may scold one another relentlessly, yet instantly become fiercely protective if someone from the outside causes harm. That instinctive desire to protect loved ones remains at the heart of the drama.

The Heartbreaking Separation: An Eight-Year Scar
Set against an era many describe as even harsher than the IMF financial crisis or the COVID-19 pandemic, ‘Love On The Menu’ offers viewers a warm and comforting weekend escape.
Kim Moo Jin and Han Gyu Rim embody that message as two people weighed down by family obligations and life’s hardships, struggling, growing, and finding their own paths.
Episode 4 rapidly unfolded the painful events that ultimately separated the couple. At the beginning of the episode, Kim Moo Jin, working as a day laborer at a construction site carrying cement bags, suffered a devastating accident after failing to avoid falling building materials. He lost consciousness and was rushed to the hospital.
Meanwhile, Han Gyu Rim, who was busy working part-time jobs, received a tearful and urgent phone call from her father, Han Seok Joong (played by Ryu Seung Soo). Rushing home with a sense of foreboding, she found him covered in injuries and discovered overdue payment notices and debt collection letters he had been hiding, leaving her emotionally devastated.
After receiving a call from Park Jung Woo (played by Min Jin Woong), Han Gyu Rim hurried to the hospital and learned that Kim Moo Jin had been living in a tiny boarding room and surviving on construction day jobs after being kicked out of his home. As she tearfully watched him lying unconscious in his hospital bed, Kim Moo Jin’s older sister, Kim Yoon Jin (played by Miram), approached her.
“Moo Jin gave up everything because of you. Please let him go,” she pleaded. Unable to hold back her emotions any longer, Han Gyu Rim broke down outside the hospital room as memories of their happier days came flooding back.

When she returned home and saw red property seizure notices plastered across the house, Han Gyu Rim made the painful decision to leave Kim Moo Jin for his own sake. She later met Kim Yoon Jin again and demanded 100 million KRW in exchange for leaving Kim Moo Jin. Deliberately pretending to be heartless, she said, “Now that I know exactly what kind of family he’s from, what could be attractive about a penniless construction worker like Kim Moo Jin?”
After regaining consciousness, Kim Moo Jin’s first concern was Han Gyu Rim. However, after listening to the recording of her seemingly cold rejection, he was left devastated and confused. Following months of rehabilitation, he visited her home using crutches, only to find strangers living there. When he called her phone number, he was met with the automated message that the number was no longer in service, leaving him overwhelmed by feelings of betrayal.
A Fateful Reunion in Unexpected Places
Eight years passed, and their lives had completely changed. Han Gyu Rim was now raising her eight-year-old son, Han Gyeol (played by Yoon Ha Bin), on her own while working at a side-dish shop run by Park Soo Nam (played by Kang Ae Shim).

Kim Moo Jin, meanwhile, had transformed into the owner-chef of a restaurant famous for its unusual policy of banning couples from entering. Although he had become successful, simply hearing Han Gyu Rim’s name still caused him to shut down emotionally.
Their reunion began in the most unexpected way. While playing an online game at a PC café, Kim Moo Jin became furious after finishing fourth and started arguing with another player in the game’s chat room. At that same PC café, Han Gyu Rim, who was cleaning while her son Han Gyeol played games nearby, noticed the argument appearing on her son’s monitor. Ignoring his attempts to stop her, she grabbed the keyboard and fired back at the anonymous player. Without realizing who the other person was, the former lovers became embroiled in a fierce online argument.
By the end of the episode, the dispute escalated so far that both ended up at a police station. As Han Gyu Rim stumbled while leaving after questioning, Kim Moo Jin instinctively caught her by the hand and coldly remarked, “If you’re going to run away, at least do it properly.”
The episode concluded with Kim Moo Jin freezing in shock after seeing a young boy happily run toward Han Gyu Rim shouting, “Mom!” He then noticed Jo Heung Sik (played by Bae Jung Nam) standing naturally beside her, leaving viewers with a dramatic cliffhanger ahead of the next episode.
As ‘Love On The Menu’ continues to skillfully blend deep emotional exploration with the realities of life’s burdens and unexpected turns, K-drama fans are left eagerly anticipating what’s next for Kim Moo Jin and Han Gyu Rim. With its compelling storyline, stellar performances by Ha Seok Jin and Ahn Hee Yeon, and a strong message of resilience and enduring connection, this KBS2 weekend drama is definitely one to add to your must-watch list!
