Jang Yoon Ju Opens Up: Overcoming Prejudice as a Model

In the vibrant world of K-Pop and Korean entertainment, stars often share glimpses into their personal lives, revealing both the glamour and the challenges they face. Model and acclaimed actress Jang Yoon Ju, a respected figure known for her charismatic presence in both fashion and television, recently opened up about a particularly poignant chapter from her past: the significant prejudice she encountered early in her career, including surprising opposition to her marriage from her future in-laws. Her candid revelations offer a deeply personal and inspiring look at the struggles even established personalities can overcome.

Unveiling Past Hurdles

Jang Yoon Ju shared these deeply personal insights in a video released on August 1st on her popular YouTube channel. Titled “A Day When I Shared Life Stories from Visiting a PD’s Home, Including a Matchmaking Meeting and Boyfriend’s Parents Opposing Our Relationship,” the video provided a raw and honest account of her journey. She specifically recalled the period before her marriage, stating, “There was opposition from my in-laws.” This wasn’t an isolated incident; she revealed, “Even before, when a boyfriend introduced me to his parents, most of them viewed me unfavorably because I was a model.”

The Stigma of a Model

She elaborated on the societal views of her profession at the time, painting a picture of a different era. “At that time, unlike now, perceptions of models were very different. Many opposed our relationship because of prejudice against the profession, and I was deeply hurt and cried a lot over it. The hardest part was that I wasn’t welcomed even before they got to know me as a person.” This heartfelt admission shines a light on the unfair judgments many face based purely on their career choices, rather than their inherent character or personality.

The challenge became particularly acute when her now-husband, businessman Jung Seung Min, first expressed his desire to marry her. Jang Yoon Ju recounted hearing that her mother-in-law expressed significant worry, saying, “‘Would it be okay for someone with that kind of job to come into our family?’” This direct questioning of her suitability for marriage, solely based on her modeling career, underscores the deep-seated prejudices she had to contend with.

Changing Hearts and Minds

However, Jang Yoon Ju’s story takes an incredibly inspiring turn, demonstrating the power of understanding and genuine connection. She revealed how an appearance on the EBS program ‘Mother’s Story’ alongside her own mother played a pivotal role in changing perceptions. The show authentically depicted their unpretentious daily life, even showcasing them growing vegetables on their rooftop. Her astute husband recognized the opportunity, recommending the program to his parents and advocating for her character: “She’s not indulgent or materialistic; she actually grew up more modestly than we did.” After watching the show, her mother-in-law experienced a profound change of heart, admitting, “I think I had prejudices,” and subsequently opened her heart to Jang Yoon Ju.

Jang Yoon Ju married Jung Seung Min, who is four years her junior, in 2015, and they are now proud parents to one daughter. Her journey is a powerful testament to resilience, the importance of seeing beyond superficial judgments, and how genuine character can ultimately break down even the most deeply rooted societal prejudices. It’s a reminder that empathy and understanding can triumph over initial skepticism.
