Byul’s Early Success & Heartbreaking Family Tragedy
Byul began by recalling her impressive debut, stating, “My debut song did really well. After the first broadcast, by the second week I was a candidate for number one and actually took first place, and I won the Best New Female Artist award that same year.” Her career seemed destined for immediate stardom.
However, amidst this promising start, a devastating family crisis unfolded. She continued, “Despite being a rookie, my company arranged a solo concert for me, so I was preparing for that first concert when my dad had an upper endoscopy. During that, he got injuries in the esophagus and throat area, which led to an acute bacterial infection.”
The situation quickly escalated into tragedy. Byul revealed, “He was hospitalized to have the inflamed area surgically removed, but while lying down, he developed a slight fever and went into the CT room for a scan. There, he went into cardiac arrest due to drug shock,” she recalled. “Because immediate treatment wasn’t possible, his brain was deprived of oxygen for several minutes, causing brain damage, and he was moved to the ICU.”

A Decade of Devotion: Byul’s Family Journey
Following the devastating medical accident, Byul’s father remained in a vegetative state for a heartbreaking 10 years. During this incredibly difficult decade, her entire family dedicated themselves to his care. Byul became visibly emotional as she spoke about the immense sacrifices made, particularly by her brother. “When I think about my older brother, who spent his 20s looking after dad without ever pursuing his own dreams, I feel he’s even more pitiful than I am.” She confessed the burden she felt, “Seeing dad lying there with mom and my brother at his side, I couldn’t tell them I was struggling.”
Haha’s Moving Promise: Why Byul Chose Him
It was during this challenging period that Haha entered her life, persistently pursuing her. Byul shared a poignant episode about introducing him to her family, specifically bringing him to visit her bedridden father. She recounted, “On the way back after visiting dad in his bedridden state, he didn’t say a word. From a man’s perspective, it could seem like a burden, so I asked, ‘Seeing him in such critical condition, are you feeling a lot right now?’”
Haha’s response was unexpected and deeply moving. She said, “Suddenly, my husband’s eyes filled with tears, and he said, ‘I’m so honored. I’m truly honored to be a part of this family.’” Byul added, “He saw our family as very close-knit, exactly what he had dreamed of—a family that loves and cares for one another. He said, ‘If I’m with this family from now on, there’s nothing to fear. We can overcome anything.’”
Byul expressed the profound impact of his words, “That comforted me more than words like ‘You’ve been through a lot’ or ‘Well done.’ He was the very first person to truly acknowledge the ten years I spent. Marrying him was actually a proud moment for me, too.” Haha’s unwavering acceptance and love for her family proved to be the bedrock of their enduring relationship, solidifying Byul’s decision to spend her life with him.
