ARMY Power: Chile Reverses BTS Concert Ban After Protests

The power of ARMY has once again proven undeniable! In a massive win for fans, the Chilean government has dramatically reversed its controversial decision to block BTS’s highly anticipated “ARIRANG” World Tour concerts in Santiago, following widespread and peaceful protests from thousands of dedicated fans across the country.

What began as a public outcry has culminated in a triumphant victory for the fandom. Chile’s National Sports Institute (IND) had initially dropped a bombshell on July 2, announcing that BTS would not be permitted to use Santiago’s iconic National Stadium for their three scheduled “ARIRANG” World Tour concerts on October 14, 16, and 17. The news sparked immediate outrage. However, after powerful nationwide demonstrations staged by ARMY on July 5, the government swiftly changed its tune on July 6, stating it would now consider granting conditional approval.

The Initial Roadblock and Fan Frustration

The IND’s initial denial stemmed from a technical report. Officials claimed that the installation of BTS’s ambitious 360-degree stage could potentially damage the stadium’s pristine grass field and necessitate an extended setup and dismantling period. This decision deeply frustrated fans, especially given the historical significance: these South American concerts were set to mark BTS’s first performance in Chile since their monumental 2017 WINGS Tour – a nine-year wait that had fueled immense anticipation. Each show was expected to draw approximately 48,000 attendees, meaning nearly 150,000 fans were looking forward to seeing their idols live across the three dates. Tickets had famously sold out immediately when sales opened in April, highlighting the immense demand.

Adding to the controversy, authorities rejected the venue application, stating that concert organizer DG Medios had failed to submit a technical protection plan that met the required standards. Chile’s Minister of Sports, Natalia Duco, attempted to quell the uproar, insisting the concerts weren’t “canceled” but rather being considered for relocation. She suggested alternative venues like the outdoor plaza inside National Stadium Park and Cerrillos Park. However, both fans and industry observers quickly pointed out the stark reality: no alternative venue in Chile could realistically accommodate more than 48,000 spectators, effectively rendering the concerts impossible. This left ARMY feeling unheard and dismissed.

ARMY Rises: The Power of Peaceful Protest

Refusing to back down, ARMY mobilized swiftly and decisively. On July 5, fans organized powerful, peaceful demonstrations that resonated nationwide. Carrying iconic purple balloons – a symbol of BTS and ARMY – they marched to Chile’s presidential palace, La Moneda, their voices united in singing beloved BTS songs. Their protest signs conveyed messages of unwavering dedication and frustration, including “For God, Bring BTS to the National Stadium,” “No BTS No Life,” and the defiant “Today We Fight.” These demonstrations weren’t isolated; they erupted simultaneously in 11 cities across Chile, showcasing the sheer scale and unity of the fandom.

The controversy quickly garnered significant attention. According to Spain’s EFE news agency, one impassioned protester accused the Chilean government of making a “political decision” to distract from domestic issues, condemning the move as “extremely unfair and disrespectful.” Chilean lawmakers also weighed in, adding their voices to the chorus of criticism. Liberal Party congressman Alejandro Bernales argued passionately that rejecting BTS’s concerts would deal a blow to both Chile’s economy and its international reputation, calling the government’s initial decision contradictory and short-sighted. Local newspaper El Ciudadano further reported that the Chilean government’s handling of the situation had become an international embarrassment after it gained significant coverage from Korean media outlets, amplifying the pressure.

Government Reversal and the Path Forward

Amid mounting public pressure and international scrutiny, the government ultimately reversed course on July 6. They announced a willingness to review conditional approval, provided the concert organizers installed a protective system that met all technical requirements to preserve the stadium’s integrity. This turn of events is a testament to the organizational power and unwavering dedication of ARMY, proving that their collective voice can indeed move mountains – or, in this case, secure a stadium for their beloved artists.

The ARIRANG World Tour: A Global Phenomenon

Meanwhile, the ‘ARIRANG’ World Tour continues its extraordinary journey, cementing BTS’s status as global superstars. The tour is a colossal undertaking, scheduled to span an incredible 88 concerts across 34 cities worldwide. Its success is already historic.

On June 29, Billboard announced that the BTS World Tour ARIRANG had topped its prestigious Top Tours chart for May, marking its second consecutive month at No. 1 after previously leading the rankings in April. The tour’s May revenue saw an astonishing 68% increase from the previous month, while attendance rose by an impressive 54%, showcasing its accelerating momentum.

During May, BTS captivated audiences in four cities—El Paso, Stanford, Las Vegas, and Mexico City—earning a staggering 127.8 million USD from just 12 concerts held between May 2 and May 28. Billboard reported that this was the highest monthly tour revenue ever recorded by a group since the chart was introduced in 2019, shattering The Rolling Stones’ previous record of $95 million set in August 2019 by an incredible 35%.

This marked BTS’s fourth time topping Billboard’s Top Tours chart, following previous No. 1 rankings in May 2019, April 2022, and April 2026. According to Billboard, only six artists have achieved at least four No. 1 finishes on the chart: BTS, Bad Bunny, Beyoncé, Coldplay, Elton John, and Trans-Siberian Orchestra – an elite company that underscores BTS’s unparalleled touring prowess.

Further highlighting their dominance, BTS’s four-night Las Vegas engagement alone ranked No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Boxscores, generating an incredible 49.5 million USD in ticket sales. Concerts at Stanford Stadium, Estadio GNP Seguros in Mexico City, and Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso ranked second through fourth, respectively, further illustrating the tour’s massive financial and cultural impact.

Since its launch on April 9, the ‘ARIRANG’ World Tour has already accumulated a colossal 204 million USD in total revenue. The tour is scheduled to run from April 2026 through March 2027, featuring 85 concerts across 34 cities in 23 countries, with over 60 shows still remaining. Billboard projects that the tour is confidently on pace to surpass BTS’s previous highest-grossing tour, the BTS World Tour LOVE YOURSELF, which earned 213.9 million USD, setting a new benchmark for group tours.

The European leg of the tour recently kicked off with electrifying performances in Madrid on June 26 and 27, followed by successful shows in Brussels on July 1 and 2. The group also delivered a memorable concert in London on July 6, continuing their global conquest.
