Yoo Yeon Seok’s Tax Appeal Rejected, Agency Responds

Yoo Yeon Seok’s Tax Appeal Rejected by Tribunal

Yoo Yeon Seok, known for his diverse acting roles, faces a significant development in his ongoing tax dispute. South Korea’s Tax Tribunal has rejected his appeal seeking to overturn a tax assessment of approximately 3 billion KRW (around 2.1 million USD).

Agency Addresses “Differences in Interpretation”

His agency, King Kong by Starship, addressed the situation through a statement to Dispatch on August 5th, emphasizing that “This matter stems from differences in the interpretation and application of tax law.” They further clarified that “The related legal procedures have not yet been fully concluded,” suggesting further actions may be taken.

According to the report, the Tax Tribunal recently dismissed Yoo Yeon Seok’s appeal. The core of the issue lies with Forever Entertainment, a private company established by the actor to conduct his activities. However, the National Tax Service (NTS) determined that this corporation had not been carrying out substantive business directly related to supporting his entertainment endeavors.

Timeline of the Tax Assessment and Appeal

The saga began last year when the NTS initially imposed a substantial tax assessment of more than 6 billion KRW (approximately 4.2 million USD). Yoo Yeon Seok then requested a pre-assessment review, a process that successfully reduced the final amount to roughly 3 billion KRW. After meticulously paying this revised tax, he subsequently filed an appeal with the Tax Tribunal, seeking to challenge the validity of the assessment.

Despite his efforts, the tribunal ultimately ruled in favor of the National Tax Service, upholding the initial assessment’s validity.

Next Steps and Agency’s Commitment

While this marks a setback, Yoo Yeon Seok still has potential avenues for dispute. He may choose to escalate the matter by filing an administrative lawsuit. However, his agency remained cautious about immediate next steps, stating, “Nothing else has been decided at this point, so it is difficult for us to provide additional details.”

Under South Korea’s Framework Act on National Taxes, a taxpayer has a window of 90 days from the receipt of the tribunal’s decision to file a lawsuit with the administrative court. Should this deadline pass without action, the tax assessment would become final and legally binding.

The agency concluded its statement by reiterating their commitment: “We will faithfully respond to any necessary matters in accordance with the procedures prescribed by relevant laws and regulations.” They also highlighted the actor’s consistent adherence to his civic duties, affirming, “Yoo Yeon Seok has consistently fulfilled his tax obligations in good faith, and he will continue to approach this matter responsibly.”
