Do Daeyoon of Togeworl, the beloved duo known for their unique sound and unforgettable journey on Superstar K3, has bravely shared the deeply personal struggles that led to his sudden departure from the spotlight over a decade ago. His powerful confession sheds light on the immense pressures faced by young artists and the critical importance of mental health within the demanding K-pop industry.
Togeworl’s Unexpected Disappearance
The K-pop world buzzed with excitement as Togeworl, featuring Do Daeyoon and Kim Yerim, reunited on the July 17 episode of KBS2’s Happy Together: Happy Because We’re Not Alone. This marked their first appearance together as a complete duo in 13 years, catching even veteran judge Yoon Jong Shin by surprise. Yoon Jong Shin, who had personally selected the pair during preliminary auditions in New York for Mnet’s Superstar K3 in 2011, fondly remembered them as his favorite team. Togeworl captivated audiences, ultimately securing third place and successfully entering the entertainment industry. However, their promising activities with Mystic Entertainment came to an abrupt halt less than a year later when Do Daeyoon unexpectedly returned to the United States.

Do Daeyoon’s Battle with Mental Health
During the emotional broadcast, Do Daeyoon candidly revealed the hidden reason behind his abrupt exit: he had been suffering from severe bipolar disorder at the time.

The reason I had to take such a long break was that I was seriously struggling with bipolar disorder. I had no choice but to step away for a long time.
— Do Daeyoon
Kim Yerim recalled the grueling reality they faced post-Superstar K3. As high school students thrust into sudden fame, they were unprepared for the relentless schedule of performances, concerts, and promotional events. It was amidst this whirlwind that she began noticing significant changes in Do Daeyoon’s behavior and emotional state. Do Daeyoon explained that he felt an immense, suffocating pressure but lacked the courage or emotional tools to articulate his struggles. Still navigating adolescence, he continued to suppress his stress until his condition escalated dramatically. Feeling utterly lost and without an obvious coping mechanism, he made the agonizing decision to return to the United States, believing it was his only option.

His mental health journey included an even more harrowing experience, which he had previously disclosed in 2024. Do Daeyoon revealed that during a period of severe mental health difficulties, his own mother had admitted him to a psychiatric hospital against his will.

A Decade Apart: Finding His Way Back
After leaving Korea, Do Daeyoon tried to forge an entirely new path, far removed from the entertainment world. He explored various professions in the United States, working in a jewelry warehouse, quality inspection, office administration, and even bartending, proving his belief that music wasn’t his sole destiny. He also reportedly managed singer Jang Beom June until last year, maintaining a tangential connection to the industry.
Despite spending more than a decade away, Do Daeyoon confessed that Togeworl was never far from his thoughts. Summoning immense courage, he eventually returned to Korea and reached out to Kim Yerim, tentatively asking if she would be willing to perform with him again.
A Long-Awaited Reunion and Healing
The heartwarming reunion on stage saw them perform “Fox,” a song from their Superstar K3 days. The performance was deeply emotional, especially for Do Daeyoon, who had carried the heavy burden of guilt throughout their years apart. Filmmaker Jang Hang Jun eloquently observed that Do Daeyoon appeared to be using the stage not just to perform, but to express a profound apology and a heartfelt desire to start anew with Kim Yerim.
Kim Yerim, reflecting on their reunion, admitted that performing with Do Daeyoon again immediately reminded her of the natural harmony their voices created. While her solo career had seen her collaborate with numerous artists, the reunion made her acutely aware of how uniquely Do Daeyoon’s voice had complemented and supported her own. For Do Daeyoon, the experience was almost surreal, describing the flood of emotions as difficult to fully explain. He also took a moment to directly thank Kim Yerim for her unwavering strength during the years she was compelled to continue her musical journey alone.

I’m grateful to Yerim. It could not have been easy for her to promote alone while I was in the United States. I’m sorry, and she worked very hard.
— Do Daeyoon
More than a decade after bipolar disorder, forced hospitalization, and overwhelming pressure abruptly derailed his career, Do Daeyoon’s return signifies not only a long-awaited Togeworl reunion but also a deeply personal and courageous attempt to reclaim the music and life he once had to leave behind.
