Rocky’s ‘Fake It’ Review: A Mixed Bag for the Astro Star

Rocky’s Solo Journey Continues

Even with Astro currently inactive as a group, its members have consistently delivered solo material, much to the delight of their fans. Rocky, in particular, has been a prolific force, though his solo output has often presented a mixed bag. For many AROHA, myself included, his B-sides frequently outshine his title tracks. Based on the captivating highlight medley for his latest album, it appears this trend of disparity might continue.

Dissecting “Fake It”: A Vibe Over Structure?

His new title track, “Fake It,” attempts a captivating slow burn, weaving a sinuous, Taemin-esque groove. This particular sonic approach has been a well-trodden path for many male K-Pop soloists, often risking imitation rather than innovation. While Rocky undeniably possesses the raw talent to underpin such a sophisticated sound, “Fake It” ultimately leaves a frustrating impression. Beyond its moody, atmospheric aural landscape, the song struggles with its fundamental structure. It feels more like an evocative vibe than a complete, structurally satisfying piece, with numerous moments where Rocky’s vocals stretch into lengthy, almost searching notes, as if trying to anchor a melody that hasn’t fully materialized.

When “Fake It’s” beat eventually does make its presence known, it unfortunately serves a rather uninspired hook. Composed of truncated phrasing and delivered with a somewhat detached, sing-talk style, it aims for beguiling mystery but often lands closer to non-committal and a touch pretentious. Rocky, with his inherent charisma, thrives as a classic K-Pop showman, yet “Fake It” doesn’t offer him sufficient opportunities to truly shine in that capacity. However, it’s not without its merits; the climactic synths that dramatically close out the track are genuinely thrilling, providing a much-needed jolt of energy. Overall, while “Fake It” showcases Rocky’s vocal prowess and artistic ambition, it struggles to fully coalesce into a memorable title track.
