K-Pop Rookie OURBIRTHDAY Brings “Whip-Hop” to the Scene

The K-Pop world just got a whole lot brighter! Rookie girl group OURBIRTHDAY has officially burst onto the scene, marking a vibrant new chapter in K-Pop’s exciting landscape. Debuting this past Wednesday with their first single, also titled “Our Birthday,” the seven-member powerhouse delivered a dazzling press showcase at Blue Square in Seoul’s Yongsan District, just hours before their highly anticipated release.

This debut is particularly significant as OURBIRTHDAY is the first K-Pop girl group associated with JYP Entertainment since NMIXX’s successful launch in 2022. They also hold the distinction of being the first act to debut under JYP’s exciting new subsidiary label, INNIT Entertainment. The group’s unique name, OURBIRTHDAY, reflects their charming ambition: to infuse every ordinary day with the joy and specialness of a birthday.

“This is a moment all of us have been waiting for, so we’re excited,” shared member Cho Hye-jin, radiating enthusiasm. “We prepared hard through the predebut period, and it means a lot to finally be promoting as a complete group.” U echoed this sentiment, noting how the team name immediately shaped her expectations. “When I first heard it, I thought every day would feel happy and special.” Baby added a touching detail, explaining that the group truly became real to her at that moment: “It didn’t sink in that the seven of us were debuting as one team until I heard the name. It suits us.”

Stepping into a Legacy: The JYP Connection

Debuting under the extended JYP family brings with it a formidable legacy, one that includes iconic groups like Wonder Girls, Miss A, TWICE, ITZY, and NMIXX. The members acknowledged the immense weight of these successful predecessors. “It would be a lie to say we feel no pressure, given how many accomplished senior artists there are,” Achiraya admitted honestly. “We want to use that as a driving force and show better performances and what makes us different.”

Producer Park Jin-young himself offered sage advice, focusing not on musical technicalities but on the bedrock of any successful group: relationships. “He told us that getting along is what matters,” U revealed. “Even when opinions clash, we try to respect one another and speak honestly so we can keep working together for a long time.” This emphasis on teamwork hints at a strong, cohesive dynamic within OURBIRTHDAY.

“Whip-Hop” and a Unique Predebut Journey

OURBIRTHDAY’s debut single features four exciting tracks: the vibrant title track “Our Birthday,” the energetic “SQUEEZY,” and their two acclaimed predebut releases, “HUNGRY (Side A)” and “HUNGRY (Side B).” The group introduces an innovative new genre they’ve coined “whip-hop.” This captivating sound is described as a fusion of hip-hop with a “free-form blend” of the seven members’ unique charms, likened to the delightful versatility of whipped cream.

“It’s a genre we came up with so that different personalities could meet and produce an atmosphere that belongs to us,” Shin Hye-won explained. But don’t expect them to stay confined; she added, “But we plan to take on other genres as well, not just ‘whip-hop.'” This promise of versatility is sure to excite fans.

The group’s predebut rollout was notably unconventional. Breaking from the typical K-Pop launch strategy, OURBIRTHDAY initially split into two units for their “HUNGRY” releases. Cho, Baby, and Achiraya formed Side A, while Kuk Cho-rok, Shin, U, and Kirara took on Side B. This unique approach allowed fans to experience different facets of the members even before their full group debut. Baby shared her experience from these unit promotions: “Having fans in front of us was different from what we were used to and it gave us more energy onstage.”

The funk-based dance track “SQUEEZY” serves as a powerful showcase for the group’s collective energy. Its repetitive hook and lyrics, which metaphorically use the image of squeezing a squishy toy to work out stress, resonate with a fresh, relatable theme. “It puts a sweet, kitschy melody against an intense stage, so the energy of all seven of us comes through,” Kuk Cho-rok detailed. “The bold choreography and the confident attitude expresses our own color.”

When asked about their ultimate goal and how they wish to be remembered, Kuk Cho-rok articulated a desire for authentic recognition. “More than any other label attached to us, we want to be remembered by our name,” she stated, emphasizing their unique identity. “And we want to perform on more stages than we do now.”

With a powerful debut, a unique sound, and a clear vision, OURBIRTHDAY is poised to make every day feel like a celebration for K-Pop fans worldwide. Keep an eye on these seven rising stars!
