OurBirthday Debuts: JYP’s New Girl Group Unveils “Whip-Hop” Sound

JYP Entertainment’s highly anticipated new multinational girl group, OurBirthday, has officially burst onto the K-Pop scene, making a dazzling first appearance as a full group during its debut showcase in Seoul on Wednesday. The seven-member ensemble introduced fans to their unique musical identity, dubbed “whip-hop,” promising a fresh sound that perfectly blends distinct charms with powerful hip-hop influences.

A New Flavor of K-Pop: The Birth of Whip-Hop

Taking the stage at Yongsan-gu’s Blue Square, OurBirthday marks JYP Entertainment’s first girl group launch in four years, following the successful debut of Nmixx. Managed by JYP subsidiary Innit Entertainment, the group immediately captivated the audience with their debut song “Squeezy.” They also performed a dynamic version of their predebut track “Hungry,” which had previously teased fans through separate Side A and Side B unit performances.

The members described “whip-hop” as a genre that truly embodies their collective essence. It’s designed to blend the seven members’ distinct charms with the strong impact of hip-hop, much like whipped cream, creating a unique sound and atmosphere that is unmistakably OurBirthday’s.

During a Q&A session, Kuk Cho-rok, who handles rap in the group, said OurBirthday’s strength lies in the members’ “energetic and distinctive performances,” adding that they hope to carve out their own path through whip-hop and be remembered simply as OurBirthday. Vocalist Shin Hye-won further clarified that while whip-hop is their signature, their music won’t be confined. “Whip-hop is a genre that only OurBirthday can create, but we also have many different sides to us, so we plan to present diverse genres as well,” Shin stated, hinting at exciting future releases.

A Global Lineup United by Dreams

Another defining feature of OurBirthday is its truly multinational lineup, with four of its seven members hailing from outside Korea – two from Japan, one from Thailand, and one from Taiwan. Each member shared personal stories of how K-pop ignited their dreams and ultimately led them to pursue a career in Korea.

Thai member Achiraya revealed that Blackpink was her initial inspiration, particularly after witnessing Lisa’s charismatic dancing and the group’s genuine joy in performing. Japanese member U shared her lifelong love for music, noting that the powerful lyrics of K-pop songs deeply influenced her ambition to perform on a grand stage. Another Japanese member, Kilala, became a devoted fan of Twice after discovering them on social media in elementary school, admiring their performances and teamwork, which eventually led her to successfully audition for JYP. Taiwanese member Baby started learning dance at a young age, consistently watching K-pop videos, which fueled her aspiration to become an idol.

Familiar Faces Ready for the Spotlight

Several members were already familiar to K-pop enthusiasts even before their official debut, having garnered attention through various survival shows. Leader Cho Hye-jin, a particularly notable figure, had appeared on Mnet’s “Street Dance Girls Fighter 2” before triumphing as the winner of KBS’ survival audition program “The Ddanddara.” U, who previously showcased her talents on SBS’ “Universe Ticket,” secured third place on “The Ddanddara,” while vocalist Shin Hye-won was a participant on JTBC’s “R U Next?”.

Cho’s debut as part of a group drew significant attention, as many viewers had anticipated her pursuing a solo career given her frequent solo or duet appearances on “The Ddanddara.” Addressing this, Cho shared her perspective: “As someone who majored in dance and loves dancing, I liked the idea of working in harmony with the other members and achieving things together.” She added, “That’s what led to this decision, which I made together with the company.”

OurBirthday is set to embark on an exciting journey, promising to deliver energetic performances and diverse music that reflects their unique “whip-hop” identity and multinational charm. Fans worldwide are eager to see what this fresh new group will bring to the K-pop landscape.
