K-Pop fans, get ready to dive deep into the world of K-rock masters ONEWE as they return with their most ambitious project yet! RBW’s powerhouse rock band has just dropped “面 : Unknown Atlas,” a monumental 17-song album that’s already capturing hearts with its unique concept and powerful sound.

The Genesis of “Unknown Atlas”

What began as a simple idea from the band’s youngest member blossomed into an epic journey. “It was a ball our youngest member set rolling,” shared bassist Giuk, speaking from a cafe in eastern Seoul’s Gwangjin District. “It kept rolling until it became a big snowman. We all got more and more ambitious.” This ambitious spirit culminated in an album that closes a significant chapter for the five-piece group, a work they’ve been meticulously building since May. Named after the Chinese characters for point, line, and plane, the project began with the single “點 : The Quiver,” moved through the digital single “線 : The Wake,” and now culminates in this full-length masterpiece. Fans will be thrilled to discover twelve brand new tracks alongside five beloved songs, including “Coordinates,” “Compass,” and “Neverland,” carried over from their earlier releases.

A Storybook of Fairy Tales

At the heart of “面 : Unknown Atlas” lies a captivating theme: every new song is a masterful rework of a classic fairy tale. “Lilliput” challenges listeners to resist comparison, advocating for self-worth. “Laputa” paints a vivid picture of an island moving autonomously to protect its cherished secrets. And “Pinocchio” delves into the journey of a boy navigating growth while concealing his inner wounds.

The track “Scenario” stands out with its alternative rock foundation, elevated by soaring piano melodies and lush strings. It’s a powerful anthem about reclaiming forgotten ambitions and refusing to be bound by endings written by others. Guitarist Kanghyun perfectly encapsulates the album’s magic: “Each song delivers a different message. But when you listen to them together, the whole thing feels like a storybook.”

ONEWE’s Evolution and the K-Rock Landscape

Formed by the talents of leader and main vocalist Yonghoon, guitarist Kanghyun, drummer Harin, keyboardist and vocalist Dongmyeong, and bassist Giuk, ONEWE debuted in May 2019 as RBW’s pioneering male rock band. A testament to their artistic integrity, the members have consistently written and produced their own material throughout their career, delivering gems like “ONE” in 2020 and “WE : Dream Chaser” in March last year. The timing of this new release couldn’t be better, with Yonghoon and Kanghyun returning from their military service in 2024 to a music landscape that has noticeably shifted, embracing bands with renewed enthusiasm.

“That was the turning point,” Dongmyeong reflected. “We used to talk about wanting to play a lot of stages, and now there are far more summer rock festivals. The public can come across our shows more easily.”

Crafting the Epic: Challenges and Choices

While a five-year gap separated their first two albums due to initial inexperience, this time, ONEWE moved with impressive speed. This swift creation was partly due to years of members diligently writing between promotions, resulting in a treasure trove of unused songs. Kanghyun had “Laputa” and “Lilliput” waiting for their moment, while Giuk held onto “Pinocchio.” The brilliant idea of weaving these disparate songs into a cohesive fairy tale theme started as a casual suggestion. As Kanghyun wisely noted, “If each member writes just three songs, that’s already 15.”

However, recording such an ambitious project came with its own set of hurdles. Because the title track and B-sides were locked in late in the process, the band lost studio time it had counted on having. Yonghoon, the main vocalist, admitted, “The singing itself was hard. They’re all different genres, so I had to switch personas every time I recorded.” Even the choice of the lead single proved challenging, with the band deadlocked between the impactful “Scenario” and the “bolder and more unconventional” “Pinocchio,” as described by Dongmyeong. The tie was ultimately broken by seeking honest feedback from friends and family outside the industry.

Looking Forward: Durability and Dreams

Seven years into their journey, ONEWE’s enduring unity is a testament to their early philosophy of open communication and resolving conflicts head-on. Yonghoon shared valuable advice they received from veteran acts like Jaurim on how to last: “They told us to each carry our share. Simple words that landed hard,” he recalled with a laugh. Looking ahead, the band harbors dreams of gracing an Olympic Park stage next year, and fans can catch them sooner at their sixth solo concert, “O! NEW E!volution VI,” on September 19 and 20.

Despite their impressive discography and growing recognition, ONEWE still has one major goal in sight: a song that instantly resonates with the public. “Having one hit is homework we still have to do,” Yonghoon stated candidly. Bassist Giuk, ever direct, concluded with a metaphor that will resonate with any market watcher: “This album is the last chance to buy us at the bottom.” This statement isn’t just a bold declaration; it’s a testament to ONEWE’s unwavering belief in “面 : Unknown Atlas” as the album that will propel them to new heights. Don’t miss out on this captivating new chapter from one of K-rock’s brightest stars!
