Nowz’s Bold Comeback: ‘Achilles’ Blends ’80s Disco with Mature Charms

Boy group Nowz made an exciting return on Wednesday with their digital single “Achilles,” captivating fans with an ’80s-inspired disco sound. The quintet embraces a distinctly more mature image, a significant shift following their previous release in November. This highly anticipated comeback marks their first Korean release in 10 months since the vibrant single “Play Ball,” and comes on the heels of their successful Japanese debut EP, “Nowz,” released earlier in March. The new track further showcases Nowz’s impressive musical evolution, as they continue to explore diverse genres after experimenting with rock, EDM, and hip-hop in recent releases.

At a special showcase held ahead of the single’s release, the members unveiled “Achilles” as the dawn of a new chapter for the group. They introduced a groundbreaking “zero sexy” concept—a subtle, understated take on sexiness, drawing inspiration from the clean, refreshing image associated with zero-sugar drinks. Leader Hyeonbin elaborated on this intriguing idea: “‘Zero sexy’ is the keyword that best represents this comeback. We wanted to show a fresh kind of sexiness that we hadn’t been able to show before, so we worked hard to improve everything from our visuals to our performances.”

Embracing “Zero Sexy” and Artistic Growth

Highlighting the nuance of their new concept, member Yoon added, “When people think of ‘sexy,’ they often imagine something very obvious. But we wanted to show a charm that’s more subtle — something you can feel naturally without it being overly emphasized.” Siyun further explained that this evolved concept is a direct reflection of the group’s artistic growth. “Until now, most of our songs have been focused on the concept of youth and the challenges and achievements we face in our youthful days,” he shared. “But this time, we wanted to show a more mature side of Nowz to show how much we’ve grown musically over the years.”

“Achilles” brilliantly reimagines 1980s funk and disco, infusing it with a modern K-pop sensibility. The track vividly depicts the exhilaration of falling in love at first sight and the subsequent flurry of confusion. This release once again broadens Nowz’s already impressive musical spectrum, building on their explorations of rock in “Everglow,” EDM in “HomeRun,” and hip-hop in their Japanese single “Ammo.” The song’s title itself draws profound inspiration from the mythological figure Achilles, expertly using his famous vulnerability as a metaphor for the transformative power of love. Siyun clarified the lyrical depth: “Achilles represents a weak point. Even the strongest person has a weakness, and we interpreted that weakness as love. We wanted to portray the process of someone gradually falling apart because of one person.”

A Retro Vibe with Global Ambitions

Despite none of the members having been born during the original disco era, they revealed that the genre’s retro sound was something they had long harbored a desire to explore. Hyeonbin shared his excitement: “We were all born in the 2000s, but we’ve always been interested in older music. We thought it would be interesting to see what kind of performance five people from our generation could create with a song inspired by the 1980s.”

Looking ahead, Nowz hopes this fresh release will introduce their unique sound to an even wider audience while steadfastly continuing to expand their global presence. Following their dynamic comeback, the quintet is slated to perform at the prestigious TMElive International Music Awards at Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong later this month. Yeonwoo expressed the group’s ambitious outlook: “We’re still hungry to show many different sides of ourselves musically. We’d love to perform at more festivals, awards shows and events, and continue meeting fans through a variety of stages.”
