Mark Lee’s Confederate Flag Controversy: The Incident Unfolds
The K-Pop world has been abuzz with discussions surrounding Mark Lee, following his departure from NCT and subsequent involvement in several unfortunate incidents, including serious allegations of racism that drew significant fan concern.
These stemmed from the idol wearing a shirt featuring a Confederate flag, a symbol associated with slavery, white supremacy, and the American Civil War. The incident immediately ignited widespread backlash across social media, with many fans expressing profound fury and disappointment over the idol wearing such a controversial symbol. A notable point of contention was raised by some, sharing that Canadians, like Mark, are often taught about the deep-seated history and painful meaning behind the flag in their education system.
Company’s Initial Statement and Mark’s Decision to Address the Issue
The initial response to the outcry came from his company, which promptly released a statement addressing the situation. However, for many fans and concerned communities, the apology felt insufficient and left a considerable portion of the audience unsatisfied.
For a period, the matter simmered, but now, Mark has now directly addressed the controversy himself, taking to a personal platform to share his thoughts and also touch upon his future plans as an artist.
During a candid live stream on Instagram, Mark admitted that the entire situation had been weighing heavily on his mind for quite a while, and that he genuinely felt a strong need to personally address it. This direct communication was a significant move for many watching.
Mark’s Direct Apology and Future Commitments
Regarding the t-shirt with the Confederate flag on it, I am aware of the pain that it brought to a lot of people. Um, especially to my Black fans, to the Black community — I know that I was, I should have, I am very responsible for — But, I really wanted to directly tell you guys it really wasn’t my intention with me knowing the meaning of the flag, the historical significance of it. It really shouldn’t have happened and it really does not reflect who I am as a person. Seeing so many fans hurt by it it really hurt me as well. I had no intention, knowing the meaning of the flag, and I should have, there are no excuses for that. I just wanted to promise you guys that nothing like that will ever happen again.
— Mark
Elaborating further on his commitment to accountability, he added more, saying that he and his team had already taken substantial steps to make sure such an incident wouldn’t happen again. Mark also stated that he had been sitting on his thoughts about the sensitive situation for a while, carefully considering how to approach it, and that it seemed like it was finally the right time to speak out.
It really breaks my heart to think that maybe the trust has been broken but I promise that I’ll make it up to you guys. With my actions and with my music, I’ll make sure to make it up to you guys, if you will allow me to have one more chance.
— Mark
Demonstrating a commitment to learning and growth, Mark also promised to educate himself more thoroughly on “that matter” as well, expressing that he was truly shocked when he learned and read about the historical context and negative connotations of the symbol. He reiterated that he and his team had diligently tried to ensure the controversial image wasn’t included in any official content, but regretfully, the photo was ultimately leaked, leading to the widespread issue.
Fan Reactions to Mark Lee’s Apology
In the wake of this direct apology, fan and public reactions have predictably been mixed, reflecting the complex emotions surrounding the issue. Some feel strongly that Mark’s apology took far too long to be delivered, expressing doubts that it felt genuinely sincere given the delay.
this vtuber ass apology. so you and your whole team…are all stupid enough to not know what a confederate flag looks like? yall knew that the written apology was dogshit and then let you address it via an unprepared livestream of you talking in circles. okay. https://t.co/x7EASjfai3

Conversely, many others acknowledged the challenging timing and praised Mark for finally stepping forward directly. These fans expressed immense gratitude that he chose to personally address the communities he affected, valuing the directness of his communication.
holy fking finally. it’s still not my apology to accept and it’s about time, but finally, we have acknowledgement of the black community and the ISSUE and the accountability. all the “I”s. that’s what i personally wanted to hear. again not my place. but better than the og letter. https://t.co/aM2u59VcBh

“hes saying um a lot” is better than reading robotically from a prepared script. “took him 2 months” is better staying silent for the rest of his career.
if he didn’t do this live then you’d STILL be on his ass for not doing anything. none of you will be satisfied https://t.co/VkVVVzw4Lz
