SHINee’s Onew & Key Questioned in Unlicensed Medical Probe

SEOUL – The K-pop world is abuzz following reports that police are investigating allegations of illegal, unlicensed medical practices involving several prominent entertainers, including SHINee’s Onew and Key. The Gangnam Police Station has questioned a number of major public figures through July, as part of a widening probe into an unlicensed practitioner.

K-Pop Idols and Celebrities Questioned

The investigation has seen TV personality Jun Hyun-moo, SHINee members Key and Onew, and popular YouTuber Lickerish Hatnim (Kim Mi-kyung) summoned for questioning. Earlier in the year, comedian Park Na-rae was also questioned in May regarding the same allegations. These figures are part of a broader group of public personalities potentially linked to the case.

Unlicensed Practitioner “Lee” at the Center of Probe

At the heart of the probe is a suspect identified only as Lee, accused of administering IV infusions to celebrity clients in vehicles and residential officetels. Lee also faces allegations of illegally prescribing medications, including antidepressants, without the necessary licenses. The investigation gained significant momentum following a police raid on Lee’s residence in early 2026, leading to the broader questioning of public figures.

Understanding South Korean Law on Medical Practices

Under South Korean law, practicing medicine without proper licenses carries severe criminal penalties. Furthermore, patients who knowingly seek out and receive illegal services from an unlicensed individual can face prosecution as accomplices. This legal backdrop adds a layer of complexity for the celebrities involved, highlighting the serious implications for both practitioners and those who receive treatments.

Onew’s Agency Responds to Allegations

In response to the unfolding situation, Onew’s management company, Griffin Entertainment, issued a statement on August 11th to clarify the singer’s involvement. The agency stated that Onew had visited a medical facility for skincare treatments after being introduced to Lee by an acquaintance. Griffin Entertainment explicitly detailed Onew’s understanding at the time: “At the time, Onew fully understood the individual to be a doctor or a medical professional affiliated with the hospital. There were no external indicators or circumstances that would have led him to doubt the person’s medical licence or the legality of the procedures.”

Cooperation and Call for Prudence

The agency also confirmed Onew’s full cooperation with law enforcement during a round of questioning in May, where he provided a truthful account of his experience. As the investigation progresses, Griffin Entertainment urged the public to exercise caution, stating: “As the investigation is actively ongoing, we request that the public refrain from circulating unverified speculation or information that is inconsistent with the facts.” This appeal highlights the sensitivity of the ongoing legal process and the potential for misinformation to impact those involved. Fans are encouraged to await official updates and support their idols during this challenging time.
