The first half of 2024 has delivered some exciting shifts and reaffirmations in the vibrant K-Pop landscape, according to the latest industry data. Charting a phenomenal rise, singer-songwriter Hanroro’s heartfelt track “Landing in Love” captivated listeners across Korea, emerging as the most-streamed song. Meanwhile, global powerhouse BTS once again proved their unparalleled sales power, with their latest album, “Arirang,” topping album sales.
Hanroro: The Surprise Streaming Queen
“Landing in Love,” a standout track from Hanroro’s debut EP, “Take-off,” wasn’t an instant hit upon its release in August 2023. Instead, it built its momentum through organic word of mouth, particularly resonating deeply with younger listeners. This slow burn transformed into an unstoppable ascent, solidifying its status as Hanroro’s signature hit. The Korea Popmusic Industry Association’s midyear report, utilizing Circle Chart data, confirms its No. 1 ranking in both the digital and streaming categories for the January-June period. Its consistent presence in the top 10 of the Circle Chart’s weekly digital and streaming charts since late November truly underscores its enduring appeal and marks it as one of the defining songs of the first half of the year.
BTS: Album Sales Legends Continue Their Reign
While Hanroro dominated streams, the kings of album sales, BTS, added another record to their illustrious career. Their fifth studio album, “Arirang,” became the highest-selling album during the same six-month period, moving an incredible 4,224,016 copies. Released on March 20, this 14-track masterpiece delves into the profound identity of BTS as a group that originated in Korea, exploring the universal emotions its members have encountered throughout their journey. This sales milestone reaffirms BTS’s enduring impact and the unwavering dedication of their global fanbase.
Global K-Pop Chart: Huntr/x’s Animated Phenomenon
Beyond domestic charts, the global stage saw an intriguing leader. While the comprehensive midyear data was announced by the association, the Circle Chart website currently only reflects the first-half update for the Global K-pop Chart. Topping this crucial chart, which meticulously measures both domestic and overseas streaming, was “Golden,” a track performed by the fictional girl group Huntr/x. This unique act originated from the hit Netflix animated film “KPop Demon Hunters,” proving that K-Pop’s influence can transcend traditional artist boundaries. “Golden” held the coveted No. 1 spot for an astonishing 38 consecutive weeks on the weekly version of the chart, showcasing its immense international appeal.
The first half of 2024 has truly been a vibrant period for K-Pop, highlighting both the power of organic growth and the consistent dominance of established titans, alongside exciting new avenues for global reach. Fans eagerly await what the second half of the year will bring!
