Shockwaves are rippling through the K-Pop and hip-hop communities as a celebrity, known as Member A from a prominent hip-hop group who gained fame on a music competition program, has been brought to trial on serious charges of cultivating marijuana.
The news comes from the Government Joint Investigation Headquarters for Drug Crimes, which announced on July 22 that a four-month intensive investigation, running from March 4 until recently, has led to the indictment of 12 individuals for violating the Narcotics Control Act.
Among those indicted is the aforementioned Member A. The artist is specifically accused of cultivating three marijuana plants at their residence over a period from May last year to May this year. Furthermore, Member A is also facing charges for possessing approximately 155.9 grams of the illegal substance.
The extensive investigation also uncovered other significant cases. Three additional individuals, one of whom is a composer in his 40s, have reportedly been jointly cultivating marijuana since 2019 and were found to be in possession of over 900 grams of the drug.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of South Korea’s stringent drug laws, which carry severe penalties for cultivation, possession, and distribution. The K-Pop industry, often under intense public scrutiny, faces yet another challenge as this high-profile case unfolds, drawing significant attention to the legal and social ramifications of drug-related offenses within the entertainment world.
