Comeback Corner: U-KNOW, WONHO, HYOLYN & More

This week’s K-pop releases continue churning out summer themes, as well as throwback nods to 2000s pop/R&B from
artists like HYOLYN and 8TURN. Meanwhile, TVXQ’s U-KNOW delivers another showstopping contemporary pop comeback,
WONHO trades in his R&B sound for a wild dance-pop track, and SEVENTEEN’s Dino (Picheolin) turns a running joke
into a trot bonanza.
U-KNOW – “Time’s Tickin’”
After releasing his first studio album in 2025, I-KNOW, veteran TVXQ member U-KNOW is back with his
latest single, “Time’s Tickin’.” Since his official solo debut back in 2019, U-KNOW has largely been drawn to
dramatic, explosive, and theatrical title tracks — effortlessly complementing his showman image and performances
over the years. As expected, “Time’s Tickin’,” is no different, drawing on contemporary pop dance styles with a
powerful progression that includes the sound of a ticking clock. Lyrically, the track is about staying true to
one’s determination and aspirations, despite the passage of time. With pulsating vocals and his signature rap
style, no one embodies this type of conviction and tenacity quite like U-KNOW.
WONHO – “Don’t Wake Me Up!”
From the slinky sounds of 2000s hip-hop and R&B in his 2025 release to his latest club anthem, soloist
Wonho has returned with “Don’t Wake Me Up!,” a ferocious dance-pop track that “captures the desire to escape
reality by surrendering to an irresistible fantasy.” It wouldn’t be Wonho if it weren’t sexy in some way — an
image he’s been known for even in his MONSTA X days — but this is a much different type of sexy than what we’ve
seen before. Instead of revisiting his usual restrained, calculated, and sultry vibes, the singer has unleashed
a rebellious, animalistic side that’s intense and relentless yet no less alluring. Between the pounding bass,
layered synths, and explosive drums, “Don’t Wake Me Up!” might just be in the top echelon of recent K-pop club
bangers.
HYOLYN – “ChecK”
Reclaiming her title as one of K-pop’s original summer queens, soloist Hyolyn is serving early 2000s
pop/R&B nostalgia in her new single, “ChecK.” With a smooth Timbaland-coded beat and synths, the track is
both musically and visually reminiscent of early Beyoncé — one of the many Western acts she’s cited as her
influences since childhood. With her distinctive confidence, attitude, and charm, the singer flaunts her knack
for alluring the attraction and gaze of others, almost like it’s her superpower, and for all intents and
purposes, it is. “If you wanna find me, I’ll be sitting pretty with my girls / Check / My nails to my hair /
Check / Looking hotter than hell,” Hyolyn sings in the infectious hook. This is the perfect mid-summer sassy
single for those days when you’re especially feeling yourself.
Picheolin (SEVENTEEN’s DINO) – “Micheo Micheo”
Under his humorous retro alter-ego, Picheolin, SEVENTEEN’s youngest member Dino has dropped his second
pre-release track, “Micheo Micheo.” The story behind the singer’s alter ego originated in 2021 as a parody
boomer character during SEVENTEEN’s CARATLAND concert VCRs and fan meetings. Quickly becoming a fan-favorite
among CARATs — the group’s fanbase — Dino has officially decided to turn this memeable persona into an entire
musical extension of himself. While the singer’s previous pre-release single, “Love Sick,” was an ode to city
pop, “Micheo Micheo” goes full trot, leaning into the absurdity and theatrics of it all. Surprisingly, the
27-year-old’s vocals work amazingly in the trot style, seamlessly bending his voice to emulate the retro style
of the popular Korean genre. If you’re new to Dino, this has to be one hell of an introduction — but don’t
worry, even longtime fans are just as surprised and delighted by this lively tonal shift.
fromis_9 – “Vitamin ME”
Delivering another summer anthem after 2025’s “Like You Better,” girl group fromis_9 is back to conquer the
heat with “Vitamin ME.” Combining dance-pop with a Latin-style rhythmic groove and guitar, the song is running
on citrus and sunshine, injecting the listener with all the necessary feel-good vitamins to enjoy the summer via
fromis_9. “One, two, three / Refresh your heart, zesty lime juice / I would hate to see you with a gloomy
attitude,” Hayoung and Jiwon sing in the first verse. With light and airy vocals on top of an already breezy and
lively number, “Vitamin ME” is just the cool-down needed to escape the heat and dive into pure bliss.
8TURN – “Stagefright”
If you’ve been looking closely at this year’s K-pop trends (and even last year’s), you’d know that EDM and
house have taken off again, but so has R&B/pop — both of which many boy groups have been getting into a lot
lately. This time, eight-member group 8TURN throws its hat into the ring with “Stagefright,” an addictive
R&B/pop track that’s actually quite the heel turn compared to what the group’s done before. Venturing away
from their usual blend of pop, EDM, and hip-hop, “Stagefright” pulls back and offers a more sophisticated sound
for the group, with breathy vocals and a dynamic rhythm that sounds and feels best when cranked up to full
volume. Whether you’re listening with headphones or in the car, you’ll end up wanting to hit repeat before the
song is even over.
