K-Pop Album Exports Shatter Records in First Half of Year

K-pop album exports have shattered previous records in the first half of the year, government data revealed on Friday, showcasing the genre’s explosive global growth. The industry’s incredible momentum was significantly fueled by powerhouse groups like BTS and BLACKPINK, whose recent releases captivated fans worldwide.

According to import and export trade statistics from the Korea Customs Service, K-pop album exports soared to an astonishing $257.48 million between January and June. This represents a monumental 125 percent increase compared to the same period last year, underscoring the genre’s ever-expanding international appeal.

BTS and BLACKPINK Drive Unprecedented Growth

A major contributor to this record-breaking success was BTS with their highly anticipated fifth studio album, “ARIRANG.” Released in March, this marked the global sensation’s first new album in three years and nine months, creating immense excitement among their dedicated fanbase. Adding to the industry’s stellar performance, BLACKPINK also made a significant impact with their third mini album, “Deadline.” Launched in February, the album swiftly became a massive hit, selling nearly 2 million copies by June and further cementing BLACKPINK’s status as a global K-pop icon.

Global Demand: Top Importers Revealed

The global reach of K-pop albums is evident in the import figures. The United States led the charge as the largest importer, accounting for an impressive $74.12 million in K-pop album sales during the period. Following closely were China, with imports totaling $61.18 million, and Japan, securing $45.61 million in sales. These figures highlight the widespread demand across diverse international markets.

Rounding out the top ten importing nations, further demonstrating K-pop’s truly global footprint, were Germany, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Britain, France, and Poland. This broad distribution of sales across continents paints a clear picture of K-pop’s undeniable and growing worldwide dominance.
