Ji Soo’s Philippines Comeback: A New Life After Scandal

Former K-drama actor Ji Soo, widely recognized for his roles in popular series like ‘Strong Woman Do Bong Soon’ and ‘Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo,’ has candidly shared insights into a profound turning point in his life. After his career in Korea was halted by a significant bullying scandal, Ji Soo revealed how he hit rock bottom and subsequently embarked on a journey to turn his life around in the Philippines.

In a recent, revealing interview with media outlet Osen, Ji Soo spoke openly about his current endeavors and his successful adaptation to life in the Philippines. He is now signed with GMA, the country’s largest broadcast station, and has been actively appearing in various programs, marking a new chapter in his acting career. A notable difference Ji Soo highlighted is the agency system: unlike Korea where actors typically sign with management agencies, in the Philippines, artists often sign directly with broadcasting stations.

This morning I went out for an interview on what would be the Philippine equivalent of Morning Garden and I did my own hair and makeup. I had to save money ,I just couldn’t bring myself to spend it on that.

This is a bit different from Korea, and actors often have to cover their own expenses.

Beyond his new professional path, Ji Soo is also dedicated to personal growth. He also talked about how he has been learning English, and his current proficiency, demonstrating his commitment to fully immerse himself in his new environment and enhance his communication skills.

I always had a dream of working overseas, and I decided I needed to properly study English, so I started [studying] when I came to the Philippines. I hired two private tutors and worked hard, and now I’m at a level where it doesn’t get in the way of my work.

The journey has been one of deep reflection as much as it has been about new opportunities. Finally, he spoke about how his bullying scandal forced him to change his mindset and turn his life around, emphasizing a newfound perspective and a determination to live with greater purpose.

GMA approached me first, which is how I ended up working in the Philippines.

Honestly, I’m someone whose life once fell apart. But when something breaks or collapses like that, you actually reach a kind of freedom. Going through something like that made me feel I needed to work even harder at whatever I do.

It’s been exactly two years since I started working in the Philippines. Being Korean does bring a bit more attention, and more people recognize me than before. I’m grateful that wherever I go, people respond so warmly. Seeing that, I find myself learning a lot too.

Recently, I briefly went back to Korea in July before returning to the Philippines. Korea was extremely hot too. I hope everyone is taking care of their health.
