The powerhouse singer is set to drop her fifth EP, “Summer, I,” on Tuesday, a collection of seven tracks designed to take listeners on an emotional journey through the intricate stages of love, all under the vibrant and poignant imagery of summer.
Ahead of the album’s release, Jeong Eunji hosted an exclusive listening session with the press in Gangnam-gu, southern Seoul, on Thursday. There, she introduced “Summer, I” as one of the most deeply personal projects she has ever undertaken. This marks her first musical offering since her remake album “Log” in November 2022 and her first full-fledged EP since “Simple” in July 2020, making the wait for fans even more eager.
Unpacking “Summer, I”: Love, Season, and Self
The evocative album title, “Summer, I,” holds a dual significance for Jeong Eunji. It not only reflects the season of her birth but also represents a curated collection of stories that she describes as uniquely her own. “I was thinking about what could symbolize me, and summer naturally came to mind since I was born in August,” she shared, revealing the personal connection. “But love also feels a lot like summer, so I thought I could bring those two things together. ‘Summer, I’ is about summer, love and myself.” This introspection promises an EP brimming with authentic emotion and artistic expression.
Jeong Eunji’s commitment to this project goes beyond just performance; she actively participated in producing the entire album, lending her creative touch to writing and composing several tracks. To enrich the soundscape, she collaborated with esteemed musicians such as Kwon Jeongyeol of 10cm, Jukjae, and singer-songwriter So Soobin. Their diverse contributions ensure each song boasts a distinct texture, yet the EP remains cohesive, united by its central, powerful theme of love.

Jeong Eunji emphasized that “Summer, I” is an album meant to be experienced sequentially. I think that willingness to do it anyway is what matters most.” The intentionally high notes in the song serve a dual purpose: they reflect the powerful musical style listeners have long associated with her and perfectly capture the bright, liberating energy of summer. “I thought about what kind of song could bring together the things people know and like about me,” she said. “I love band music, and I also thought those higher notes could give listeners that refreshing sense of release that summer has.”

While “Summer, I” features several lighthearted and playful tracks like “No Fight,” “Linguine,” and “With the wind,” the album masterfully navigates a more somber turn. Songs such as “Gradually,” “Rainy Season,” and “Empty” shift the mood towards separation, exploring the heavier emotions that accompany the end of a relationship. “I think love carries a lot of emotional weight,” Jeong Eunji reflected. “That’s why I didn’t want to end the album lightly. I wanted it to end with that emptiness, because the space left by something that mattered so much can be difficult to bear, and I felt that this emotion would be relatable to many listeners.”
15 Years On: Growth Beyond the Charts
With a remarkable 15 years already under her belt in the K-Pop industry, spanning her illustrious career with Apink and her successful solo endeavors, Jeong Eunji revealed that “Summer, I” also served as a profound moment of reflection on her significant growth as a songwriter. For her, the true triumph of this album transcends typical chart performance; it lies in the deeply satisfying creative process that brought it to life. “I already feel like I’ve gained everything from this album. Everything came together so naturally, and I was so happy throughout the entire process,” she shared with heartfelt sincerity. “I hope my listeners will be able to sense my happiness and pride behind this album, too.” Her words promise an EP that is not just a collection of songs, but a genuine piece of her heart.
