K-Pop Star Cha Eun-woo Challenges ₩13 Billion Tax Bill

Seoul – K-Pop sensation and versatile artist Cha Eun-woo, a beloved member of boy band ASTRO, is making headlines following his agency’s announcement regarding a significant tax appeal. On Aug 2, his agency, Fantagio, confirmed that Cha Eun-woo has filed a tax appeal challenging a 13 billion won (S$11.5 million) assessment imposed by the country’s National Tax Service (NTS). This comes after the multi-talented singer-actor paid the full amount, a move that has piqued the interest of fans and industry observers alike.

Fantagio Confirms Cha Eun-woo’s Legal Challenge

Fantagio stated that Cha, 29, submitted a petition to the Tax Tribunal in early July, firmly arguing that the substantial tax assessment was improper. The agency reiterated its commitment to legal due process, stating, “Cha Eun-woo has filed a tax appeal through the legal procedures provided under the law to seek a legal determination.” They also requested understanding from fans and the public regarding the sensitive nature of the ongoing process, adding, “As the matter is currently under review, we ask for your understanding that we are unable to comment further.”

Understanding the Tax Appeal Process

For those unfamiliar with the process, a tax appeal is an administrative procedure. It allows taxpayers to formally challenge the legality of an assessment issued by the NTS. The regulations typically require such a petition to be filed within 90 days of the taxpayer receiving the tax notice or becoming aware of the assessment.

Background to the Tax Assessment

This current situation stems from a prior tax investigation into Cha Eun-woo. He was previously subjected to a tax investigation over allegations related to the distribution of income through a one-person agency registered in his mother’s name. This investigation brought financial scrutiny to the idol’s income management.

According to South Korean reports released in January, the NTS concluded its investigation by determining that the company effectively functioned as a paper company. Initially, this led to a much higher assessment, reportedly more than 20 billion won in taxes. Cha Eun-woo had sought a pre-assessment review to contest this initial finding, but unfortunately, that request was rejected. Following further adjustments, which included considerations for double taxation, the final assessment was significantly reduced to the 13 billion won figure. Crucially, he paid this revised amount in full, demonstrating his compliance while still pursuing a legal challenge.

Potential Outcomes and Future Steps

The outcome of this appeal holds significant implications for the K-Pop idol. If the Tax Tribunal rules in his favour, Cha Eun-woo could receive a refund of the substantial taxes he has already paid. Should the appeal be rejected, however, the legal avenues do not necessarily close. He would then have the option to file an administrative lawsuit to further challenge the assessment.

In unrelated news regarding his personal commitments, Cha enlisted in the South Korean military in July 2025 and is currently serving in the military band. THE KOREA HERALD/ASIA NEWS NETWORK.
