Cha Eun-woo Challenges ₩13 Billion Tax Assessment
Global sensation Cha Eun-woo, beloved member of ASTRO and a prominent actor, is currently embroiled in a significant legal matter concerning his finances. It was revealed that the multi-talented star has filed a tax appeal challenging a substantial 13 billion won ($9 million) assessment imposed by the National Tax Service. This revelation comes after his agency confirmed on Sunday that Cha had already paid the full amount.
Fantagio Confirms Legal Action
Fantagio, Cha Eun-woo’s agency, issued a statement confirming that their artist submitted a petition to the Tax Tribunal early last month. The core of the appeal argues that the initial tax assessment was improper.
The agency emphasized the legal nature of the action, stating, “Cha Eun-woo has filed a tax appeal through the legal procedures provided under the law to seek a legal determination,” the agency said. They also requested understanding from fans and the public, adding, “As the matter is currently under review, we ask for your understanding that we are unable to comment further.”
Deciphering the Tax Appeal Process
For those unfamiliar with the South Korean legal system, a tax appeal is an administrative process through which taxpayers can formally challenge the legality or fairness of an assessment imposed by the National Tax Service. Such a petition generally needs to be filed within 90 days of receiving the tax notice or becoming aware of the assessment.
Background: “Paper Company” Allegations and Reduced Assessment
This current appeal isn’t the first instance Cha Eun-woo has faced scrutiny regarding his taxes. He was previously subject to a tax investigation over allegations related to the distribution of income through a one-person agency registered under his mother’s name.
According to local reports from January, the National Tax Service concluded that this company functioned as a “paper company,” essentially a shell corporation. Consequently, the NTS initially assessed taxes exceeding 20 billion won.
Cha Eun-woo subsequently sought a pre-assessment review to contest this initial figure. Although that request was rejected, after further adjustments, including those related to potential double taxation, the final assessment was significantly reduced to 13 billion won, which he has since paid in full.
What’s Next: Potential Refund or Lawsuit
The outcome of this appeal holds significant implications for the star. If the Tax Tribunal ultimately rules in Cha Eun-woo’s favor, he stands to receive a full refund of the substantial taxes he has already paid. However, should the appeal be rejected, he still retains the option to escalate the matter by filing an administrative lawsuit, further challenging the assessment.
Cha Eun-woo’s Military Status
Away from financial matters, Cha Eun-woo’s future plans include military service. He enlisted in the military in July 2025 and is currently serving in the military band.
