Cha Eun Woo’s Striking Military Transformation Goes Viral

ASTRO’s Cha Eun Woo is sending fans into a frenzy! New photos have surfaced, revealing a strikingly more muscular physique for the K-Pop idol during his military service, sparking a wave of excitement across social media.

On July 24, haegeum performer Shin Sua shared captivating photos on Instagram, accompanied by the caption, “With Corporal Lee Dong Min,” reflecting on their recent joint performance. These images captured Cha Eun Woo, whose birth name is Lee Dong Min, serving diligently as an active-duty soldier.

Cha Eun Woo famously enlisted in the South Korean Army in July last year and is currently fulfilling his duties as a corporal in the prestigious military band. Shin Sua couldn’t hide her excitement about sharing the stage with the global star, enthusiastically writing, “I’ve liked him since I was in my first year of high school, so it was such an honor and a joy to naturally end up performing on the same stage. Thank you for taking photos with me and letting me take photos too. I’m a successful fan.” Her post perfectly encapsulated the fan experience of meeting an idol.

The buzz around the newly released images is undeniable. Fans were quick to notice Cha Eun Woo’s visibly bulked-up frame, with broader shoulders and a more muscular upper body showcasing a truly striking transformation from his beloved “flower boy” image. It seems military life is certainly treating ASTRO’s visual king well!

The two talented performers reportedly met backstage after their participation in the Ministry of National Defense Traditional Korean Music Band’s regular concert, an event that brings together diverse artists to entertain the troops and public.

Cha Eun Woo’s Past Tax Controversy and Significant Payment

Earlier this year, Cha Eun Woo found himself at the center of a different kind of public attention, facing allegations of tax evasion that garnered widespread media coverage.

In January, reports indicated that the Seoul Regional Tax Office’s Investigation Bureau 4 had initiated an intensive tax audit. Authorities had determined that that, in addition to his agency Fantagio, Cha Eun Woo had established a one-person entertainment company under his mother’s name.

Further investigation led authorities to conclude that this company functioned as a mere paper company, one that did not provide legitimate entertainment management services. It was alleged that income that should have been reported as personal earnings was instead routed through this corporation. This maneuver was reportedly designed to avoid the top individual income tax rate of 45% and illegally benefit from the significantly lower corporate tax rate, a common tactic in tax evasion cases among high-income individuals.

Following the audit, initial reports suggested that tax authorities had notified Cha Eun Woo’s side of an additional tax assessment exceeding a staggering 20 billion KRW. This figure was notably one of the largest amounts ever imposed on a Korean celebrity, highlighting the seriousness of the allegations.

After a period of negotiation with the authorities, Cha Eun Woo’s representatives officially announced in April that he had fully paid the finalized 13 billion KRW tax bill. At the time, his representatives acknowledged responsibility on his behalf and stated that he would faithfully fulfill his tax obligations, effectively bringing the controversial matter to a close.

South Korea’s Ongoing Battle Against High-Income Tax Evasion

Cases involving underreported income by high-earning entertainers, athletes, and social media influencers remain a recurring and significant issue in South Korea. The National Tax Service (NTS) is relentless in its efforts to combat such practices.

The NTS regularly conducts intensive tax investigations specifically targeting celebrities, popular YouTubers, and other high-income individuals. These audits aim to uncover instances where earnings are understated or where shell companies, often established under family members’ names, are used to illicitly reduce tax liabilities.

In previous large-scale audits, the agency has successfully uncovered widespread tax violations. They identified 881 high-income business operators engaging in such practices and, as a result, collected a combined ₩695.9 billion in additional taxes. Authorities continue to maintain a sharp focus on undeclared income earned outside traditional entertainment agencies and overseas earnings, consistently stepping up efforts to combat tax evasion across all high-income sectors.
