BTS’s RM Under Fire After Chris Brown Concert Appearance
The backlash against BTS, particularly its esteemed leader, RM, appears to be intensifying significantly following an incident where the idol was seen attending a Chris Brown concert and subsequently posing with him for a social media post. This association has sparked widespread debate and concern among fans and various advocacy groups alike, raising questions about artist responsibility and choices.
The Pixel Project Suspends RM from “Honor Roll”
The latest pushback regarding this contentious issue has come from a prominent organization advocating to stop violence against women, known as The Pixel Project. In 2024, they had released an “honor roll” celebrating 16 male role models who actively contribute to stopping violence against women. RM was notably one of those names, recognized for his global influence and advocacy. However, on August 19, KST, the organization’s website revealed a significant change: RM’s entry on this prestigious list had been “indefinitely suspended.” This development sent ripples across social media, further fueling discussions about accountability and public image in the K-Pop world.

The Pixel Project subsequently issued a lengthy and detailed statement, confirming unequivocally that RM’s association with Chris Brown was indeed the primary reason for this recent development. In their statement, they also shared that the possibility of his being featured on any future list of positive role models would remain under rigorous review. This indicates a serious reconsideration of his status, emphasizing the gravity with which the organization views the matter.
In 2024, we included Kim Nam-Joon – better known as RM, the leader of BTS, the biggest boy band in the world – in our 5th honour roll of 16 male role models helping to stop violence against women. We did so in good faith after conducting due diligence which showed that he had taken steps over the years to address his own internalised misogyny, support women in the arts, and speak out about violence against women in intensely patriarchal South Korea. We also cited him as a case study in our Father’s Day 2025 op-ed on the importance of imperfect male role models because, up until then, he had demonstrated the ability to conscientiously work on doing better when it comes to unlearning misogyny, sexism, and toxic masculinity.
Effective today, we are indefinitely suspending RM from our list of male role models.
We will also be reviewing and revising our Father’s Day 2025 op-ed that featured RM as a case study of a good but imperfect male role model.

Why Public Accountability is Crucial, Says Pixel Project
The organization took the opportunity to explain in depth why it believed public accountability was not just important, but absolutely necessary in this particular case. They specifically cited BTS’s immense global influence and the unparalleled reach of its members, highlighting how their actions and associations carry significant weight and can impact millions worldwide, especially younger fans who look up to them. The message was clear: with great influence comes great responsibility.
Intent does not always align with impact. Even if RM (and J-Hope) did not intend for that picture to be a public endorsement of an abuser or violence against women, their level of fame means that they have automatically platformed Brown in front of their millions of fans and the general public. In doing so, they have contributed to perpetuating the system that normalises violent men facing minimal consequences for gender-based violence. This is despite having a fandom that is at least 90% women and girls.

The statement went further, directly calling out the BTS member not only for publicly associating with Chris Brown, an artist with a documented history of domestic violence, but also for his continued silence on the issue since the initial incident. This lack of public acknowledgment or explanation has been a point of contention for many, including The Pixel Project, who believe that silence can be interpreted in various ways and fails to address the concerns of those impacted by such associations.
The Pixel Project had been waiting for RM to issue a public statement or acknowledgement regarding the Chris Brown concert before we responded to this controversy. However, it has been a week of silence on RM’s part and that silence is deafening.
BTS is currently the biggest boy band in the world; their every action has a huge impact and influence on pop culture and the global audience. Whether they like it or not, they are public role models by default, and with this great power comes great responsibility.
We have never expected any male role model (including RM) to be perfect. Everyone is human after all. But being a decent human being also means being accountable when your choices hurt other people.

Urging Accountability: Support for Victims Suggested
The comprehensive statement concluded by urging both RM and fellow BTS member J-Hope (who was also reportedly at the concert, though not as prominently featured in the initial photos) to take some kind of tangible accountability. The organization suggested that if a direct apology for their mistake was not feasible, they should consider supporting organizations actively helping victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. This would serve as a powerful statement of solidarity and a way to channel their influence towards a positive cause, aligning with the values The Pixel Project champions.
New Endorsement Deal Also Draws Fan Criticism
Meanwhile, BTS is also facing criticism from a segment of their dedicated fanbase for a seemingly unrelated but equally significant development: their latest endorsement deal. This new commercial partnership has sparked mixed reactions, with some fans expressing concern over its implications or alignment with the group’s image and values. The specifics of the deal and the nature of the backlash are still unfolding, but it adds another layer to the complex public relations challenges the global superstars are currently navigating.
