BTS’s Unprecedented US Mainstream Domination Confirmed by Luminate Data
BTS continues to rewrite history, captivating the hearts of American music consumers at unprecedented levels. New data from global music data and analytics firm Luminate reveals the K-Pop titans have achieved record-breaking awareness and favorability, cementing their status as a true mainstream powerhouse in the U.S. The group’s fifth studio album, “Arirang,” has been a monumental success, posting the strongest vinyl sales of any group since Luminate began tracking album sales in 1991. This remarkable achievement underscores BTS’s broad appeal beyond traditional K-Pop consumption patterns.
Record Awareness and Soaring Favorability Among US Consumers
Luminate’s second-quarter survey of U.S. music consumers painted a clear picture of BTS’s growing influence. Their awareness — the share of consumers who recognize the group — stood at an impressive 42 percent, nearly touching their all-time high of 43 percent from Q3 last year. This figure is a staggering 18 percentage points above the 24 percent average awareness across all artists Luminate tracks, and approximately four times the 11 percent average among the 22 K-pop acts included in their survey. The group’s recognition spans generations, ranging from 43 percent among 13-to-17-year-olds to a commanding 59 percent among 18-to-24-year-olds, with more than half of all 18-to-34-year-olds recognizing the global superstars.
Favorability, measured among consumers who were familiar with BTS, soared to 46 percent — the highest since Luminate began surveying the group in 2021, when it was 34 percent. This positive sentiment was widespread, topping 40 percent across every age group surveyed, including an astounding 60 percent among 13-to-17-year-olds.
“Arirang” Shatters Sales Records with Mainstream Vinyl Performance
“Arirang” shattered expectations with 516,000 copies sold in the U.S. in its first week. What’s truly groundbreaking is the vinyl contribution: approximately 208,000 copies, or about 40 percent of total sales. Luminate noted this proportion mirrors the consumption patterns of top mainstream pop acts, a significant departure from the typically CD-driven norm for K-pop releases and a strong indicator of their mainstream crossover.
Sustained Streaming Prowess and Global Stage Impact
The album’s success isn’t limited to physical sales. It has also sustained powerful streaming numbers, logging nearly 5.7 billion global on-demand streams in its first 16 weeks. Furthermore, streams of BTS’s extensive back catalog simultaneously surged, pushing the group’s total streaming volume to an incredible 8.7 billion over the same period. This sustained engagement across new and older releases highlights the enduring appeal and depth of BTS’s discography. Adding to their global impact, “Arirang” made a triumphant return to the Billboard 200’s top 10 following an unforgettable halftime show performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. This high-profile appearance undoubtedly further solidified their place on the world stage.
Big Hit Music: A Broad Mainstream Base Beyond Fandom
Big Hit Music, BTS’s label, confidently stated that these findings unequivocally demonstrate BTS has cultivated a broad mainstream base in the U.S., extending far beyond their dedicated ARMY fandom. They pointed to the unprecedented vinyl sales share and sustained, robust streaming performance as undeniable evidence of the group’s lasting and expanding influence in the global music market.
