BLACKPINK’s 10th Anniversary: Fans Demand More Than Merch

BLACKPINK’s 10th Anniversary Sparks Fan Disappointment

The K-Pop world is buzzing, but not entirely with celebratory cheer as BLACKPINK rapidly approaches its monumental 10th anniversary on August 8th. What should be a joyous milestone for one of the globe’s biggest girl groups has instead become a focal point for fan disappointment, with Blinks taking to social media platforms like X to express their frustrations over what they perceive as a lack of meaningful celebrations.

YG Entertainment’s Anniversary Offerings Fall Short

YG Entertainment has unveiled anniversary merchandise, digital fan badges, and fan letter events ahead of the group’s August 8th anniversary. Among the projects announced so far is the Blackpink Heritage Collection, a unique collaboration with the National Museum of Korea’s merchandise brand MU:DS. This seven-item collection aims to blend traditional Korean design, inspired by imperial-era artefacts, with BLACKPINK’s distinct brand identity. Fans can also receive commemorative digital badges through Weverse and will be able to submit messages to the members to commemorate the anniversary.

However, these announcements have largely fallen short of fan expectations. The prevailing sentiment, echoed by the widely shared phrase “We don’t want merch, we want Blackpink,” highlights a desire for content centered directly on the four members: Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa. Many fans had anticipated more personal celebrations such as a commemorative live stream, heartfelt video messages, interactive fan events, or even the highly coveted release of new music.

Blinks Demand Member-Focused Celebrations

The fan organization Blackpink Blink Union articulated this sentiment in an open letter to YG Entertainment, stressing that the group’s anniversary “deserves to be celebrated in a meaningful way.” The letter powerfully stated, “Blackpink is not just one of YG Entertainment’s artists – they are the biggest girl group in the world. Their legacy has been built through their identity as a team and a 10th anniversary is a rare milestone that deserves to be celebrated in a meaningful way.” The Union specifically urged YG to commemorate the decade with new music, special performances, and dedicated projects.

This current wave of disappointment is compounded for some fans by what they viewed as limited promotions for BLACKPINK’s third EP, Deadline, released in February. Despite being the group’s first collective release in over three years following 2022’s Born Pink, its promotion cycle primarily consisted of a music video and album jacket photos, conspicuously lacking the extensive show performances, dance videos, and varied promotional content typically associated with major K-pop comebacks.

Echoes of Past Promotions and Anniversaries

Discussions have also revived comparisons with BLACKPINK’s fifth anniversary in 2021, when YG launched the “4+1 Project.” This comprehensive initiative notably included the global theatrical release of Blackpink The Movie in more than 100 countries, alongside other significant commemorative events, setting a higher bar for milestone celebrations.

A Call for Perspective and Future Hopes

Amidst the criticism, a different perspective has emerged from some fans, urging others to temper their expectations. They point out that BLACKPINK only recently concluded their Deadline world tour in January, followed swiftly by the EP release in February. From this viewpoint, demanding another large-scale project immediately afterward might be seen as unrealistic, given the group’s demanding schedule. Others suggest that YG Entertainment might still have surprise content planned, which could be unveiled precisely on the anniversary date itself, August 8th.

It’s also worth noting the group’s contract situation: while BLACKPINK renewed their group contract with YG Entertainment in late 2023, each member opted for separate management for their individual solo activities. This unique arrangement might influence the planning and execution of group-centric projects. As the anniversary approaches, all eyes remain on YG Entertainment, hoping for an announcement that truly honors BLACKPINK’s incredible decade and satisfies the ardent desires of their global fanbase.
